Schools in Valhalla's History

From early days of one-room schoolhouses scattered throughout the modern Valhalla area until now there have been many different buildings which have housed our childrens' classrooms. These pictures show some of them. The Valhalla Union Free School District was formed in 1923 when the Columbus Avenue School and the North White Plains School consolidated.

Camp School

This building, located on Nethermont Ave., was a private home when it was bought by the New York Board of Water Supply for use as a school for the children of the Kensico Dam workers. Night classes were held here to teach the immagrant workers how to read and write. In use from about 1909 to 1918, Camp School was replaced by the North White Plains School.

NWP Schoolthen&now

North White Plains School was built in 1918, and was a school for the Valhalla School District until 1977. It still stands, having been renovated and turned into an office building.

Cleveland St Schoolthen&now

Cleveland Street School was built in 1899 at the corner of Cleveland and Cedar Streets. It served the children of the present day Valhalla village, and is now in use as an apartment house.

CAS before additionthen&now

Columbus Avenue School was built in 1919, replacing the Cleveland Street School. The addition of the auditorium and gym in 1928 rendered this particular view impossible to duplicate now.
