Study Skills

Every student wants to meet with success. With effective techniques and the right skills, every student can perform at a higher level and have a greater enthusiasm for learning. Students learn better when they are proactive, have understanding, and have self-confidence.

Study skills techniques emphasize focusing, listening, reading comprehension, summarizing, paraphrasing, note taking, and organization skills. Keys to studying and reviewing methods are also emphasized.

Test anxiety is greatly reduced when the child is prepared, understands the material, and realizes that a person can work smarter, not harder.

Steps for a Successful School Year

  • Listen carefully--pay attention in class.
  • Stay organized--have a place for everything and everything in its place.
  • Use your agenda book on a daily basis--write down all assignments and dates of upcoming tests.
  • Have a special, quiet place to do homework and to study.
  • Review material on a nightly basis so that you do not have to cram for a test.
  • Make sure that you understand what is taught--ask for clarification, explanation, and extra help.
  • Take careful notes--put notes into your own words so that you understand what you are writing.
  • Ask a family member to review your work and to quiz you on material studied.
  • Pack up material to be returned to school before you go to bed.
  • Get a good night's rest and eat a good breakfast.

Enjoy school--we are all here to work together to make sure that you meet with success.
