road race

Spectators in front of the old Kensico dam and spillway watching the Briarcliff International Road Race, April 24, 1908. The 240-mile race began in Briarcliff, passing through Merrit Corners, Pines Bridge, Mount Kisco, Armonk, Kensico, Valhalla, Eastview, and back to Briarcliff. Twenty-two cars from the US, Italy, Austria, France, and Germany paid the $1000 entry fee to race on the 32-mile circuit for the Briarcliff Trophy. Lewis Strang, racing for Italy in an Isotta won with an average speed of 46 mph. Barney Oldfield, a famous American race driver of the day, had his engine die on Grasslands Road hill, and he finished 13th.

Washington oakthen&now

This oak tree stood for many years at the intersection of North Broadway and Virginia Road. This is now a busy intersection looking much different from this view. A bit up the road to the left stands the small house used by General Washington as a headquarters during the Battle of White Plains during the American Revolution.
